Arts at Cherry Valley

Arts at Cherry Valley

Three ways to be involved in our arts program at Cherry Valley: Arts Docent, Arts Alive, and Reflections.
Art Docent

The Cherry Valley Elementary Art Docent Program is a PTA-funded, parent volunteer-run program providing visual arts enrichment for students K-5.

With a dedicated art room, art prints, teaching materials, high quality art supplies, and clay materials and kiln, docents introduce students to the world of visual art.  No art history or art-making background is necessary--we supply everything needed to learn about and teach the basics of art.  Being an art docent is a fun and personally rewarding way for parents to help in their child's classroom!

Art docent lessons provide the following:

Art Appreciation- By looking at and discussing works by famous artists, students learn about the history of art as well as how to "read" and understand a piece of artwork.
Elements and Principles of Art- These are the building blocks of a piece of art.  The elements are the basic components:  line, shape/form, color, value, texture, and space. The principles are the ways in which the elements are used:  pattern, rhythm/movement, proportion/scale, balance, unity, and emphasis/center of interest.
Exploration of Art Materials and Techniques-  Students learn how to use various mediums and experiment with different styles to create their own works of art.

Parents interested in becoming an art docent can sign up with their child's teacher or at "Taking Care of Business" in August.    An information meeting will be scheduled soon after school starts.  At this meeting the docents will be able to pick up their grade level curriculum binders and familiarize themselves with the art room and materials.  Example lessons and projects will be demonstrated at this meeting.

Reflections
Reflections is an annual arts competition spearheaded by the National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and serves as their cornerstone arts program. Reflections helps highlight the importance of the arts as part of a well-rounded education. When children express themselves through words, pictures, music, dance, and other art forms, they grow intellectually and socially. They learn to analyze their thoughts, feelings, and ideas; learn to look at things, people, and experiences in a fresh and exciting way; and become more interested in the ideas and works of others.
